The Basics: What Exactly is eDNA?


Environmental DNA is genetic material shed by organisms into their surrounding environment. Think of it like a biological calling card. Every living creature – from the tiniest bacteria to blue whales – constantly releases tiny fragments of DNA through various means:

  • Skin cells

  • Mucus

  • Feces

  • Respiration
